Burglary suspect to stand trial

A December trial date has been set for a 19-year-old Las Vegas burglary suspect whose friend was killed while the two were allegedly burglarizing a house.

District Judge Mark Gibbons set Laron Diontae White's trial for Dec. 18 after White pleaded not guilty Tuesday morning in the death of Chay B. Stevens.

Prosecutors allege that Stevens and White broke into Willard Arledge's home on July 18 and when Arledge found Stevens in his den, he and Stevens opened fire on each other.

Stevens, 20, was struck by five of the eight bullets Arledge fired. Stevens died and Arledge escaped injury.

White was caught at a fast-food restaurant near Charleston and Decatur boulevards following a high-speed chase.

Plea agreement in fatal shooting

Two Las Vegas men were sentenced Tuesday for a fatal shooting that took place during an Evander Holyfield-Mike Tyson fight.

As a result of a plea agreement, District Judge Jeffrey Sobel gave Jason Werth eight to 20 years in prison and Arturo Pradera six to 16 years in prison for the death of Alfredo Flores, 25.

According to police, about 40 people were gathered at a house near Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street in June 1997 to watch the fight on pay-per-view when three uninvited people crashed the party.

A fight began and shots were fired with one striking Flores in an artery, causing him to bleed to death.

Pradera, 23, and Werth pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with use of a deadly weapon and two counts of attempted murder.

The men have until 10 a.m. Friday to take care of personal matters and report for transfer to prison.

Trial date set in teen's slaying

A March trial date has been set for a 40-year-old man who is suspected of gunning down a 16-year-old boy two years ago.

District Judge John McGroarty set Gonzalo Hernandez Villalobos' trial for March 12 after Villalobos pleaded not guilty Tuesday to murder in the July 16, 1998, death of Joey Cornell.

Authorities believe Villalobos opened fire on a car containing Cornell and three friends because Cornell's family members had filed a police report against a Villalobos family member.

Plea bargain taken in car burglary

A man who allegedly stole 26 cents after burglarizing Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman's car last month has taken a deal.

Fred Hogan pleaded guilty to one count of attempted burglary. Hogan could get anywhere from probation to a five-year prison term and a $5,000 fine when sentenced Nov. 27.

Police believe that Hogan smashed a window in Goodman's 1978 Mercedes-Benz convertible while it was parked in his driveway off Rancho Drive.

Hogan was arrested on Sept. 29 when fingerprints taken after an earlier arrest were found to match those left on the car.

Construction defect trial begins

Jurors heard opening statements Tuesday in a construction defect trial that is expected to last a month.

Durable Homes is suing Allied Underground, Western Landscape and Gale Insulation in connection with the Sunset Bay Condominiums, a 140-unit complex near Tamarus Street and Warm Springs Road.

According to court documents, the condominium owners association sued Durable Homes over numerous construction and design defects in the project and ultimately settled for $3.3 million.

Durable Homes then filed suit against dozens of subcontractors and design professionals.

On Tuesday the three subcontractors and design professionals who did not reach a settlement with Durable Homes, which is now known as Capital Pacific Homes Inc., gave opening arguments.
