Letter: Why isn’t Gore running away with the race?

The editorial parrots Gore campaign phrases like "the wealthiest 1 percent" as though those statements had not been challenged by Gov. George Bush and refuted by independent analysts.

For instance, Gore claims that privatizing Social Security would be a "risky scheme" -- so what does he call the current system, where our payments are not invested for retirement, but sent to a common fund and immediately redistributed to older recipients, leaving the rest of us to wonder if there'll be enough suckers on the bottom end to keep feeding the system by the time we're eligible for the benefits? That's not just a "risky" scheme, Sun, that's a pyramid scheme, and the reason it's illegal to the private sector is because it can't be sustained without fraud.

After reading this totally unoriginal piece of Clintonista religious dogma, one should step back and ask: When the president's policies (if not the man himself) are still popular, when Bush Jr. has real negatives, and when Gore has all the advantages of incumbency, why hasn't Gore pulled away with the race by now?

Perhaps because more people have realized that our liberal ruling caste are a gang of second-handers and nonintellects who talk down to the rest of us as if they knew more about the real world than we do.
