Rather than the traditional psalms sung by a soloist accompanied by piano, contemporary secular music will be spilling out the doors of a Henderson synagogue.

The Shabbatones, band for Congregation Ner Tamid, 55 N. Valle Verde Drive, will perform pop and blues hits at its 2 p.m. Dec. 14 concert.

For $10 tickets to the 90-minute concert, call 733-6292. All proceeds benefit the synagogue's music programs.

"We're doing something that the regular congregation and attendees would not normally hear," said Philip Goldstein, temple cantor. He is in charge of the synagogue's music and sings with the Shabbatones.

The group's name is derived from the Jewish word for day of rest, or shabbat.

The nine volunteer musicians will play tunes from the '60s to today, such as The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," and Carole King's "You've Got a Friend." The Shabbatones usually play modern religious music. The band includes an electric keyboard, clarinet, trombone and saxophone. A few surprise guests will sing with the group.

"It'll be a very exciting afternoon of music that will get your hands clapping and feet tapping," Goldstein said.
