Press conference about organized crime scuttled — by organized crime

Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto had it all planned out: She would make a media splash in her office Friday signing an agreement with her counterpart in Baja California to share information in Mexico's fight against organized crime.

But rising violence on the organized crime front isn't giving Baja's attorney general any time for a dog and pony show in Las Vegas.

He was summoned to an emergency meeting with Baja's governor to deal with a rash of brutal killings in the Tijuana area in the stepped-up the battle among crime groups seeking control of the illegal drug trade.

Hours after informing the media Thursday morning about the agreement signing in Las Vegas, Masto's public information officer, Edie Cartwright, had to announce it was being "temporarily delayed."

Organized crime, it turned out, was generating a little publicity of its own.
