Ambulance company wants injunction to avoid strike

The company that handles about 75 percent of Las Vegas’ ambulance needs has asked the National Labor Review Board for an injunction preventing its workers from striking.

The union has threatened to do so the day after Thanksgiving.

American Medical Response workers are represented in Las Vegas by the Service Employees International Union Local 1107 -- or maybe it’s the International Association of EMTs and Paramedics Local 5000. That, actually, is part of the problem.

AMR says it can’t sit down with two unions. It would be illegal. The unions say that’s nonsense -- they aren’t two separate entities since SEIU is the parent of IAEP -- and nothing more than a stalling tactic.

Either way, it looks like the two sides won’t sit down at the bargaining table until the NLRB weighs in. A decision should be made by Thursday.

Until then, the city and county must wait from the sidelines and hope things are resolved before Thanksgiving.
