Letter to the editor:

Carmakers are unfairly singled out

It really upsets me to see the high tone the Obama administration has taken on the domestic auto industry. I could point out the obvious double standard at work with respect to the bailout of the banks and the dissing of the auto industry. My concern is a bit different.

My father worked at General Motors when others in the business community would not hire blacks. GM has, in my view, done more to prepare for the future than any other company in this industry. It is behind because of the power of the oil industry lobby, which has for years fought to slow the move to alternative fuels.

GM has had to compete against companies whose governments contribute to research and development and has had to deal with protectionist markets. Yet, in the emerging markets, GM gains ground consistently.

I want to see the Obama administration support one of America’s great treasures, and I am deeply disappointed in the removal of CEO Rick Wagoner, who I believe was doing a good job in a terrible situation not of his making.

General Motors, Chrysler and Ford represent the pride we should all have in American ingenuity and leadership. The loss of these companies would be the beginning of the end of the American dream.
