Letter to the editor:

Our soldiers dying for Iraqis’ extravagance

On Monday I watched Chris Matthews’ show on MSNBC, “Hardball.” He reported on a New York Times article in that day’s edition headlined “Iraqis snap up Hummers as an icon of power.” It seems that Iraqis have a thirst for big autos. The Hummer has apparently replaced the Mercedes-Benz as the vehicle of choice.

What raised my ire was the fact that America is still losing young lives so Iraqis can drive yellow or red Hummers on the streets of Baghdad. We are still pouring billions of dollars fighting an insurgency and rebuilding the nation’s infrastructure. Not enough of the Iraqi oil money has been spent on either of these endeavors.

The American taxpayer and the youth of America are paying the price. The Iraqis have yet to solve their internal political issues, nor do they seem ready to pay their own way.

American military personnel are coming home suffering from lifetime injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder, with very little hope of finding a job. Articles have chronicled the number of veterans living on the street. Iraqis buying yellow and red Hummers to show off their newfound wealth only adds insult to injury.
