Letter to the editor:

Protecting nature was right thing to do

Regarding last week’s bipartisan vote on the Omnibus Public Land Management Act:

What an amazing vote for anyone who has ever enjoyed a hike through the Great Basin National Park or a boat trip in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. In the hustle and bustle of these difficult times, many Nevadans may be dreaming of escaping to the spectacular beauty of these lands. Now they can be confident that what they envision will be altered only by the forces of nature.

The 160 public lands bills that make up the omnibus equal the greatest expansion of the Wilderness Preservation System in 15 years. More than 2 million acres of wilderness across nine states add up to a lot of hard work by local groups and members of Congress.

We would especially like to thank Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid for his support of this package of public lands bills. Thanks to him, future generations will understand the beauty that we know at the Great Basin National Park as well as the other natural treasures Nevada has to offer.
