Letter to the editor:

Taxpayers owed transparency

Regarding an editorial in Saturday’s Las Vegas Sun, “Making sure money counts: Hillary Clinton right to recognize problems with U.S. aid to Afghanistan”:

It was a good editorial and I certainly agree. Not only should Secretary of State Hillary Clinton be concerned about military and civilian aid expenditures, but our Congress also should push for more efficiency and transparency in all expenditures — not just those going to foreign countries. It is, after all, our (the taxpayers’) money and we should have a right to know where it is going and why.

Afghanistan is definitely a place that deserves more scrutiny and accountability in the expenditure of U.S. funds as indicated by Madam Secretary. I would also ask Mrs. Clinton to further define her statement that none of the $900 million in U.S. aid the administration is planning to give to the Gaza Strip will go to Hamas, a U.S.-defined terrorist organization, which has control of the territory. Sounds like an impossible task but I am eagerly waiting to hear of both accountability and transparency in the deal.

Should I be holding my breath?
