A motorcyclist was critically injured Tuesday night when he ran into the rear of a van on Karen Avenue in east Las Vegas, Metro Police said.

The motorcyclist, 35-year-old Mark Himelic of Las Vegas, was taken to Sunrise Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver of the van, James Aguilar, 26, of Las Vegas, was not injured, police said.

The crash happened about 11 p.m. just west of Artic Street. Both the 1995 Triumph Thunderbird motorcycle and the 1993 Dodge Grand Caravan were headed east on Karen in the left lane when the motorcycle hit the left rear of the van, police said.

The motorcycle lost control, fell over and slid northeast into the entrance of the Lake Sahara Apartments, 2500 Karen Ave. Himelic was thrown from the bike into the right westbound travel lane of Karen Avenue, police said.
