Senate approves extending benefits for unemployed

CARSON CITY – Without debate, the Senate unanimously approved extending benefits to thousands of unemployed Nevadans.

Assembly Bill 469 goes to Gov. Jim Gibbons, who has said he would sign the legislation.

The state will receive $270 million in federal stimulus funds and the money will extend unemployment benefits by seven weeks to those who expired their 72 weeks of jobless checks.

And the weekly checks will be increased by an average $25. In addition, it will make an estimated 4,500 more people eligible for the benefits.

The bill was unanimously approved in the Assembly.
