Imagine being a missive-writer for the state Democratic Party. Where to begin? Usually it ends up here: “The embarrassing personal escapades of our incompetent governor, Jim Gibbons, have landed Nevada in the national spotlight again.” That was how Wednesday’s offering began, before meandering into an accusation that Ø asked for a meeting with the president to deflect attention from his sensational divorce papers. Then: “And with Sen. John Ensign off courting Iowans this week — apparently preparing a bid for national office — Gibbons is the de facto leader of Nevada’s Republican party.” Democrats want The Man Formerly Known as Governor as the recognized GOP leader. And that prospect scares Republicans to death.
