Letter to the editor:

In politics, the more disclosure the better

Thank you for your enlightening article on Nevada’s poor campaign disclosure laws (“Some argue against reform in name of holding good candidates’ interest,” Wednesday).

The arguments made by state legislators against Assembly Bill 82 pale in comparison with the number of Nevada politicians serving time in prison for dishonest, unethical behavior and those who conduct themselves in a questionable manner.

Saying that we will get worse political office holders if the requirements are tightened doesn’t fly with me. In some cases it seems like we are scraping the bottom of the barrel — for example, Gov. Jim Gibbons — so I am not afraid.

Our political landscape can only get better with more reporting and ethical requirements for our candidates and political office holders. Otherwise Nevada will become the next Chicago, land of the dishonest, unethical politician.
