Coach Carmona

Fernando Carmona could not picture himself watching from the stands on Friday nights.

Carmona, who stepped down as Chaparral’s football coach at the end of last season, did not stay away from coaching long. He was hired as Western’s head coach Tuesday.

“I’m looking forward to getting back on the sidelines,” Carmona said. “I wanted to compete on Friday nights. Western has a great history of athletes. The idea of having those type of athletes to rebuild the program intrigues me.”

Carmona replaces John Isola, who was released two months ago after one season. Western went 2-7 in 2008 and missed the playoffs.

Carmona plans on meeting with the players next week when students return from spring break. He will implement the wing-T offense.

“We are definitely behind the eight-ball a little bit,” Carmona said.

Carmona, a Chaparral graduate, said leaving his alma mater was one of the most difficult things he had to do. He was 14-36 in five years with the Cowboys.

“Chap will always be the second score I look at on Friday nights,” he said. “It was time to move on. It was a mutual decision (between the coach and administrators) and I was part of the committee to hire a new coach.”
