Taxicab Authority rejects Handicab certification

The Nevada Taxicab Authority has rejected a company’s plan to operate a taxi company that would emphasize serving disabled customers.

In a special meeting April 7, the authority voted 3-0 to approve two motions for summary judgment from seven Clark County cab companies that blocks a full hearing for Handicab LLC to be certificated to operate. Handicab officials haven’t decided whether to appeal.

Board members rejected the Handicab proposal, primarily because the company’s request sought 40 medallions to serve the general public with vans equipped to accommodate disabled customers.

Handicab co-owner Rob Martin said his proposal would not be economically viable unless he was able to serve more than just disabled customers.

In the past year, the Taxicab Authority has rejected expansion proposals and requests for additional medallions because the ailing economy has reduced demand for more cabs.
