Bill would lower speed limit in Red Rock area

CARSON CITY – The Senate wants the state Transportation Department to set a lower speed limit in and adjacent to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area on State Route 159 in Clark County.

By unanimous vote the state has approved Senate Bill 240 telling the transportation department in setting the speed limit to consider bicycles and pedestrians, the protection of natural resources, history of accidents and recreational activities in the area.

There have been motorcycle and bicycle deaths on the stretch. The speed limit is now 60 mph on the highway through the conservation area.

The bill, as originally introduced by Sen. Shirley Breeden, D-Las Vegas, called for the speed limit to be set at 45 mph, but was amended to allow the transportation department to decide the speed limit.

The bill goes to the Assembly.
