A Metro Police officer involved in an Easter Sunday shooting has been identified after he shot a man holding two knives who was threatening his roommate and threatening to kill himself.
Officer Shalley D. Dowdy, 37, is the officer involved in the shooting, which occurred just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 4500 block of Swandale Avenue.
The first officers on the scene ordered 37-year-old Julio Velazquez to drop the weapons and surrender, police said. The man, who was outside a residence, refused and placed a knife at his own throat, police said.
Dowdy, employed by Metro Police since 1996, fired one round and shot the man when he tried to re-enter the residence, where his 71-year-old roommate was, police said. Velazquez was taken to Sunrise Trauma Center, where he was listed in stable condition, police said. Both were Cuban immigrants.
This is the seventh officer-involved shooting in Metro's jurisdiction this year. The investigation into this event remains ongoing.
