Wind gust blamed in plane’s rough landing

A pilot says a gust of wind hit his Cessna 182 and caused it to smack down on the tarmac at the North Las Vegas Airport today.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident after the aircraft was approaching the airport on runway 25, running east and west, at 2:17 p.m. Tuesday, said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor.

The pilot reported that a strong gust of wind caused the Cessna to strike its right wing and propeller on the runway, Gregor said.

The pilot did not appear to be injured, but was taken to a hospital for an examination, Gregor said.

The extent of the damage to the aircraft is not known at this time.

The National Weather Service reported that southwest winds were blowing at speeds of 25 mph between 1:53 p.m. and 2:20 p.m., with gusts to 37 mph at the North Las Vegas Airport. The highest gust in the Las Vegas Valley so far today has been 41 mph at Nellis Air Force Base, 15 miles northeast of downtown Las Vegas.
