The Boulder City High baseball team has its signature victory.

The Eagles scored five runs in the first inning on April 7 to beat Las Vegas High 9-6 during the 32-team Durango Spring Bash.

Las Vegas is expected to contend for the Sunrise Regional title in the large-school classification and has arguably Southern Nevada's top player in catcher Bryce Harper. But Boulder City hit a pair of first-inning home runs to highlight its 2-2 performance in the tournament.

Boulder City lost 12-2 to Banning High of Wilmington, Calif., earlier on April 7, but showed no signs of the defeat in the impressive win against Las Vegas.

"That was a nice comeback win for us," Boulder City coach Bill Strachan said. "That Vegas game was our best game."

Ross LaMarca hit a solo home run and Ryan Bowen slugged a two-run home run in the first inning to pace Boulder City. Strachan said Bowen's home run was hit so hard that it nearly shattered the scoreboard.

Adam Eudy hit a solo home run earlier in the day against Banning. It was Boulder City's first home run of the season.

"We are still working on the mental aspect of hitting," Strachan said. "We have some kids with some really nice swings. We just have to teach them how to use their brains when they hit."

Jack LaMarca was 4-for-5 against Las Vegas and outfielder Shane Levin was 3-for-4.

Boulder City used the momentum from the victory against Las Vegas to close the tournament April 8 with an 11-1 victory against Buckley High of Sherman Oaks, Calif., in five innings.

The Eagles are 5-8 overall as of April 13 travel to Virgin Valley April 17 for a doubleheader.

"I like that we are improving," Strachan said. "We bounced back (in the tournament) and put two nice wins together."

Golfers have solid finish at Pahrump tournament

The Boulder City High golf team took 11th out of 20 teams at the 19th annual Pahrump Valley Invitational. Centennial High of Las Vegas won the two-day, 36-hole event with 622 — the Bulldogs' 304 on the first day was a tournament record.

Boulder City opened the tournament strong with a 344 by its four golfers, but fired a 378 on the second day to finish at 722.

"The first day I thought we played real good. But the second day we were real poor," Boulder City coach Bob Northridge said. "I think we got a little tired playing two days in a row."

Boulder City's Jeremy Dunbar took 26th out of 91 golfers who competed with a two-day 168, including 7-over-par 79 at the par-72, 6,600-yard Mountain Falls Course. The Eagles Ryan Roundtree followed in 29th at 176.

"It was a good learning experience for them because the state tournament is two days in a row," Northridge said.
