Letter to the editor:

County commission should stay part time

Once again a Las Vegas Sun editorial supports the concept of a “full-time professional” government. Now, a subheadline in Tuesday’s editorial states: “Time is right for Legislature to make county commissioner a full-time job.”

No it isn’t and it never will be. Not if you want to hold on to at least some vestige of connection between you and government. The editorial decries the “potential conflicts of interest based on outside employment.” You think that’s bad? Ask yourself about the conflicts of interest inherent in a system in which the policymakers are full-time professional government insiders.

The editorial also still leaves unanswered the question that has loomed like the iceberg ahead of the Titanic for years and years: Where? Where are all the glorious, free, fair, just, compassionate and vibrant societies being run by the full-time professionals? The Sun has never listed them because they don’t exist.

Our part-time, citizen policy-making bodies are messy for sure but they are far superior to the self-serving, “we come first,” insider-dominated political machines built by full-time government professionals.

No on SB11.
