Bill requiring ‘environmentally sensitive’ school cleaners OK’d

CARSON CITY – By an 18-3 vote, the Senate has approved a bill to require public schools to use “environmentally sensitive cleaning and maintenance products” on the floors of schools.

Senate Bill 185, which goes to the Assembly, says the Legislature wants to reduce the exposure of students and teachers “to potentially hazardous chemicals and substances which are used in the cleaning …”

The state Department of Education would set the standards for these cleaning products.

Voting against the bill were Republicans Mark Amodei of Carson City, Mike McGinness of Fallon and Maurice Washington of Sparks.

There was no debate on the bill.
