Church to move to temporary location on Adams Blvd.

The Boulder City Assembly of God Church, which currently meets in rented space on Nevada Way, received the blessing of the Planning Commission to move to a temporary building on its permanent site on Adams Boulevard.

The commission unanimously approved the plans to put a 3,500-square-foot modular building on 1.7 acres the church owns at 1100 Adams Blvd., but asked the designer of the project to move the structure west and north, away from nearby homes and Adams.

With 111 people in services last Sunday, the church has outgrown the 2,500-square-foot space it rents at Nevada Way near Buchanan Boulevard, Pastor Duane Jordan said. In addition, he said, improvements being made at the nearby intersection could take the church’s parking.

His wife, Fran Jordan, said, “We have to move.”

The church has owned the parcel on Adams Boulevard since 1999, and the city has approved plans for the congregation’s proposed 6,800-square-foot church building, he said. But financing for that project fell through, so the group is asking to move to a temporary building on the property it owns.

“It will be a good stopgap,” said Jordan, who noted that the church has to pay property taxes on the land until something is built on it.

The church will also pave the parking lot and driveways and install landscaping, the project’s designer Mike Zangara said.

The plan met with objections from Phil Pfeiler, who owns three rental properties across the street from the site.

“It’s the temporary nature I object to,” he said. “I have no objection to the church. But I know that temporary things turn into long-term things.”

Because of his objections, Planning Commissioner Cokie Booth asked that the modular building be moved west, farther from the homes.

Meeting with Pfeiler after the meeting, Jordan said he understood his concern about the temporary building becoming a permanent fixture.

“We will not let that happen,” he said.

Jordan said the church hopes to have the modular ready for use in June.
