Gibbons’ suggestion for four-day week at museums advances

CARSON CITY – A legislative budget subcommittee has approved the recommendation of Gov. Jim Gibbons to keep museums in Nevada open only four days a week.

The total general fund budget of the department for this fiscal year is $15.4 million, but that was cut by 36.4 percent by Gibbons for the coming fiscal year.

In many cases, workers at these museums will be cut back from 40 hours to 32 hours a week. Sen. Warren Hardy, R-Las Vegas, questioned if the state would be able to retain workers with these reduced shifts.

Michael Fischer, director of the state Cultural Affairs Department, said “We’re going to lose a lot more people.”

The subcommittee rejected an effort by Secretary of State Ross Miller to control the department. “There does not appear to be much support for that,” said Assemblyman Moises Denis, D-Las Vegas and the chairman of the subcommittee.
