The Elevator: Life on the cheap

Up and down the Vegas sports scene

GOING UP

Free fireworks

If you think the 51s’ pitching staff has been getting lit up, just wait until the Fireworks Spectacular — or is it an Extravaganza? — after tonight’s game against Colorado Springs. The fireworks are free. So is the 2009 schedule magnet. But a seat in the bleachers will cost you $9 — $7 if you’re hitting cleanup (or even batting eighth) for Uncle Sam.

Triple-A concessions at Little League prices

Monday’s game against the dreaded Sky Sox (they’re not really dreaded; I’m just trying to get something started) will feature $1 hot dogs. The mustard for the hot dogs costs $2.50, however. (Just kidding.) Popcorn, peanuts, Cracker Jack and pretzels also will be a buck. And I’m told staying for the game is optional.

Blue Jay Tuesdays

Any fan wearing a hockey jersey or Toronto Blue Jays gear or Las Vegas 51s’ gear (even the silly hats with the alien on front) will be admitted for $5 on these Canadian theme nights. And though you won’t get a buck off admission, if you can recite all the words to Gordon Lightfoot’s “Canadian Railroad Trilogy” you surely will impress the guy from Saskatchewan sitting next to you.

Bullring bonanza

Advance adult admission tickets for tonight’s stock car program at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Bullring are just $5. The killer $1 menu featuring hot dogs, soda and beer will be expanded to include tacos and Corona. Two kinds of dollar beers? At a stock car race? This is either gonna be a lot of fun, or resemble a Bunsen burner experiment gone awry.

Showgirlz in shoulder padz

The Las Vegas Showgirlz will host the California Lynx in a women’s football game at 6 tonight at Faith Lutheran High School, which is all the reason you need to drag your sorry butt off the sofa. Tickets are $10, or about the same price as that Hannah Montana movie. But the football game will be better, because I’ve yet to see Hannah Montana run the two-minute drill like her dad, Joe.

Lucha Libre

Sunday afternoon’s Mexican wrestling card at Star of the Desert Arena in Buffalo Bill’s at Primm will feature 24 grapplers, including 10 “minis,” some women, three-man tag-team matches and two guys who answer to Super Crazy and Super Parka. And almost all of them will be wearing masks. Tickets begin at $20, which is reasonable, or did you forget about the masks?
