Autism bill advances out of Assembly

CARSON CITY – A bill to require insurance companies to offer coverage for the screening and treatment of autism in children passed the Assembly 39-2.

Assemblyman James Ohrenschall, D-Las Vegas, said one in 150 children is affected by autism and this will encourage early treatment. The bill was a consensus proposal between the insurance companies and parents with children with autism.

Assembly Bill 162 offers benefits of up to $36,000 a year per child. It says the insured company cannot impose a higher deductible or copayment coverage than for other ill persons.

The policy would cover those under the age of 18, or under the age of 21 if enrolled in high school.

Voting against the bill were Edwin Goedhart, R-Amargosa Valley and Don Gustavson, R-Sparks.

The bill goes to the Senate.
