Letter to the editor:

Obama’s climate plan qualifies as tax hike

Some are arguing that the added tax on cigarettes did not violate Barack Obama’s promise of “not a dime” of new taxes on anyone with an income under $250,000 (or $108,000, depending on which promise you heard).

The point will become moot if he gets his cap-and-trade policy enacted. Cap-and-trade will drive up the price of gas and electricity, which will in turn drive up prices of consumer goods in general. This will have a disproportionate effect on low-income people.

Cap-and-trade is nothing more than a massive tax and a power grab, designed to get all of us under the government’s thumb.

The United States should refuse to sign on to the “Copenhagen Accord,” which will be proposed in December, just as we refused to sign on to the Kyoto Protocol. Cap-and-trade is based on the false premise that climate change is caused by CO2. If the premise is false, isn’t the conclusion also false?
