Dry weather raises risk of fires

Cooler weather to move in for weekend

Updated Wednesday, April 22, 2009 | 2:40 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a fire warning for all of Southern Nevada from 1 p.m. Thursday through 9 p.m. Friday because of hotter than normal temperatures and dry conditions.

Such warnings are issued when humidity levels are at or below 15 percent and winds from 15 mph to 20 mph with higher gusts are forecast.

Forecasters say the Las Vegas Valley could reach 95 degrees today before windier conditions sweep through Southern Nevada through the weekend. The temperature at 2 p.m. Wednesday was 93 degrees.

The record high for April 22 is 97 degrees set in 1939, weather service records show.

A pattern of storm systems continues to take aim at Las Vegas for the next week, the weather services said.

Temperatures are expected to remain in the high 80s to 90 degrees for Thursday and Friday then drop into the low to mid 70s for Saturday and Sunday with continued breezy conditions.

Another storm system from the Pacific Northwest could drop in on Monday, keeping temperatures below the normal 80s through next Wednesday.
