Letter to the Editor:

Sun brings ‘renaissance of good journalism’

Please add my congratulations to the Las Vegas Sun staff for winning the top award for journalism in 2009, the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. That was some grand old reporting hearkening back to the days when a line was drawn between the editorial department and the advertising department.

Contrary to claims by “compassionate conservative” Republicans that all news sources are “leftist,” they are under tremendous pressure today to lean to the right. They have to compete among themselves for the time of readers, watchers, listeners and the Internet; and they all compete for the dollars of the same big corporate advertisers.

An unfortunate result is that mass media are turning into mass circuses and hiring clowns to win audiences. Because of an unusual arrangement brought about by the merging of business operations of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Las Vegas Sun, the Sun is able to draw a line at its editorial door and bring Nevada readers a renaissance of good journalism as it is taught in journalism schools.
