Letter to the editor:

Why the outrage over laughing and joking?

The past few days members of the Republican Party, led by Nevada Sen. John Ensign, have lambasted President Barack Obama for, as Ensign said, “kind of laughing and joking” with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Sen. Ensign and I are about the same age and yet he does not cite American presidential history involving other really “bad” people.

I recall two presidents dealing with countries that had missiles pointed at us. They were both Republicans, Richard M. Nixon and Gerald R. Ford. I’m sure there are photos of them smiling and shaking hands with the Soviet Union’s Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev and China’s Chairman Mao Zedong.

In short, I think Sen. Ensign needs to apologize to the people of Nevada for his words that pertain to a simple handshake.
