Letter to the editor:

No ends justify torture of U.S. detainees

Former Vice President Dick Cheney is busy these days defending waterboarding, saying it has proved to be a valuable tool in gathering information from “terrorists.” He wants the facts made public. Whether torture works is not the relevant point.

The fact is that it is against our laws as well as international law. The end does not justify the means.

It has been reported that two men were waterboarded a total of 266 times. That is a little excessive for information that may or may not be credible.

If you are into torture, why not adopt some of Jack Bauer’s tactics from the TV show “24”? They seem to produce instant results. Or, if we are not worried about our laws or international laws, why not just start chopping off toes and fingers?

For eight years, Cheney and the Bush administration never seemed concerned about the Constitution, always using the war on terrorism as an excuse to take away our rights, so to them torturing was just business as usual.
