Letter to the Editor:

Just listening isn’t emboldening dictator

In response to Richard McCord’s Saturday letter to the editor in the Las Vegas Sun, headlined “How Obama has emboldened dictators”:

At a recent South American conference, President Barack Obama was photographed as legally elected Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez (not a dictator as stated in Mr. McCord’s letter) shook Obama’s hand and gave him a book outlining well-documented grievances and, therefore, not “a diatribe against the United States.”

Can it be that Obama recognizes the Bush policy of “our way or the highway” has brought nothing but contempt from many nations, and he is at least willing to listen to their concerns? Can it be that most psychoanalysts are wrong in stating that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?

It seems Obama is implementing Theodore Roosevelt’s policy of “speak softly, but carry a big stick” and not just “emboldening dictators.”
