Letter to the editor:

Cherish free speech even when it hurts

The April 19 letters to the editor section of the Las Vegas Sun contained a photo of a Santa Claus-looking fellow holding a sign at a “tea party” in front of the Wyoming State Capitol in Cheyenne. The sign, a scurrilous, vituperative display against President Barack Obama, called for the impeachment of the president because “he is a Liar! Cheat! Thief!”

My initial reaction to the sign’s message and its holder was unmitigated anger. However, upon further examination of the sign, I discovered (in very small print) that the president was also labeled “The Foreigner.”

Obviously, the Claus-looking fellow is unfamiliar with Article II of the Constitution; was the use of “The Foreigner” a bit of subterfuge concealing what he really wanted to call the president?

Anyway, my amelioration kicked in, my anger dissipated and I remain grateful that I live under a system that does not restrict free speech and expression regardless of how distasteful it appears to be.
