Bus driver in fatal Calif. crash had struck woman on Strip

The driver of a central California tour bush that crashed and killed five people, including the driver, was involved in a collision with a woman in a Las Vegas crosswalk in 2005, police records show.

The Monterey County Coroner's Office has identified the bus driver as 69-year-old John Egnew of Corona, Calif. Egnew died from head and neck injuries after he was thrown from the bus, which overturned on a freeway overpass. The bus was carrying French tourists at the time of the crash.

Three victims died at the scene Tuesday along U.S. 101 in Soledad, about 100 miles southeast of San Francisco.

In 2005 Egnew admitted he didn't see 71-year-old Joan Smith of Delton, Mich., before he struck her in a crosswalk with another bus. Smith's lawyer says she suffered brain injuries and a fractured pelvis.

Weeks Enterprises, which owns the bus that Egnew was driving on Tuesday, settled with Smith and her husband for $750,000 last year, Smith's attorney said.
