The crack Politico team put together a blow-by-blow of how Arlen Specter changed parties, and John Bresnahan and Jonathan Martin dug up this priceless nugget about Harry Reid: “Specter informed (Minority Leader Mitch) McConnell on Tuesday morning of his final decision to leave the GOP but not before some last-minute gamesmanship by Reid. Reid called McConnell on Tuesday morning to tell his GOP counterpart that Specter had asked for a meeting, and he asked McConnell what it was about. At that time, Reid already knew that Specter was ready to change parties.” Now some might conclude that Reid was simply gaming McConnell. But maybe he was simply trying to find out whether McConnell knew anything.
