Fremont Street to feature concerts, parade for gay pride

Pride 2009 is gearing up to sweep downtown Las Vegas Friday with a handful of proud pre-parade concerts.

The Fremont Street Experience will host five free concerts in advance of the annual gay pride parade.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on West Charleston Blvd. and will follow Fourth Street to Ogden Avenue.

The parade will be broadcast live on Cox channel 96 and online at cox96.net. Several rebroadcasts are also planned.

Season four “Amazing Race” champion Reichen Lehmkuhl will host tomorrow night’s festivities on Fremont Street.

Performers will include Justin “Take My Breath Away” Lanning (5:55-6:10 p.m.); Temphest Blue (5:20-5:45 p.m.); former “American Idol” contestant Dezmond Meeks (6:15-7 p.m.); and Louie Louie (8:10-10:55 p.m.).

All concerts will take place on the Third Street stage.

Organizers say the 2009 Pride Parade promises to be “the most glamorous, glittering spectacle ever created by the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community of Southern Nevada.”

Prizes will be awarded for a best walking units, vehicle units and floats.

Meanwhile, an after-parade party will be held at FreeZone on E Naples Dr. immediately following the parade. The action will continue on Saturday, as well, when the Clark County Government Center hosts the 2009 Pride Festival.

Admission for that event, which runs from noon until 10 p.m., ranges from $6-$10.
