Meadows School to mark 25 years

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, The Meadows School's faculty and students will present a glimpse into intellectual life at the school Saturday.

"An Intellectual Feast for the Mind," featuring a number of seminars on varying topics, is open to the public and will run 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in The Wanda Lamb Peccole Center for the Arts at the school, 8601 Scholar Lane.

Admission is $25 and includes a lunch from Whole Foods.

The event will include five seminars presented in succession.

"The Formation of Culture: From Lucy to Postmodernism" will be presented by Kirk Knutsen of the school's history department.

"Water, the Indispensable Resource: Issues, Conservation, Conflict" will be presented by Robert Allen of the chemistry department and Gary Handley of the history department as well as selected students.

"Mythos/Histoire/Historia/Terrik of Western Architecture" will be presented by the foreign language department faculty. The presentation will include a panoramic tour of Europe, highlighting how the architectural styles from the different cultures influenced their language.

"Robotics Come Alive" will be presented by Marc Micek of the mathematics/computer science department as well as students from the Middle School Lego and Upper School Tech Challenge robotics programs. The students will talk about their experiences engineering, building and programming their robots for this year's Lego League and Tech Challenge robotics competitions. The presentation will include demonstrations of the students' robots.

The last presentation, "Mark Twain's Houses," will be presented by Headmaster Henry Chanin. He will share hands-on research compiled over a couple of years while traveling the United States for a better understanding of Mark Twain's work through the author's life experiences as exemplified by the houses in which he lived.
