More information

The Dam & Stars Theater Co. will hold a meeting for directors, performers and financial backers at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 at the Boulder City Library, 701 Adams Blvd.

"A Midsummer Night's Dream" auditions are planned for 7 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28.

When the weather begins to warm and spring flowers bloom, Titania and Puck will be frolicking at the Boulder City Library amphitheater.

The Shakespearean characters from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" will be part of the first performance of a new local theater group.

"It will take a lot of hard work and stress to get it going, but I'm going to do it because I love the arts," said Rob Dahl, a new Boulder City resident who has acted in small community productions and improvisation for about 11 years.

The Dam & Stars Theater Co. is giving a casting call for directors, performers and financial supporters from all over the Las Vegas Valley. The group will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 20 in the library meeting room. "A Midsummer Night's Dream" auditions are planned for 7 p.m. Jan. 27 and 28.

Dahl said he is also looking for volunteers experienced with setting up a nonprofit organization. He has one business interested in sponsoring and plans to ask more.

Dahl's background is as a technician rather than an artist. The 48-year-old is a former U.S. Navy electrician who worked at nuclear power plants. He works from his Boulder City home as a production manager for a training firm.

His most recent community theater role was as Hysterium in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum."

Dahl and his wife, Lynn Schofield-Dahl, moved to Nevada last year from Kenosha, Wis., when she was hired as the new director of the Boulder City Library. Dahl said he was inspired to form a theater company when he first saw the outdoor amphitheater.

"It will get more people to Boulder City," he said.

Schofield-Dahl, who has a bachelor's degree in theater, will direct the first play.

The city is missing a theater group, said Amy Arnaz, executive director of the Boulder City Ballet Co.

"I think a theater group would greatly enhance the culture in Boulder City," she said.

"The Boulder City Ballet Co. supplies dance. The Red Mountain Music Co. supplies music. The new theater group will supply the community with live theater."

"A Midsummer Night's Dream," will run seven weeks in March and April and will cost about $1,000 to produce, Dahl said.
