The Elevator: How ‘I Fought The Law’ … and received two minutes for roughing

Who’s going to the penthouse in local sports — and who’s getting the shaft:

GOING UP

Detroit Jack(son) City

The last time anybody saw Edwin Jackson around here, he was 3-7 with an earned-run average of 8.62 for the 2005 Las Vegas 51s. On Tuesday night, the Tigers’ right-hander threw a scoreless inning for the American League in the All-Star Game. So no, I haven’t given up on Lindsay Lohan getting her act together.

I fought The Law ... and received two minutes for roughing

This elevator operator is a big fan of the Metro Police. But if you ever wanted to watch a cop get knocked on his rear end for giving you a speeding ticket in a school zone, a bunch of them will be playing the Kilroy’s Hockey Club in a benefit game at 5 p.m. today at Sobe Ice Arena at Fiesta Rancho. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for those 12 and younger.

Primeau addition

A Wranglers official said there have been tons of interview requests for Keith Primeau, the former NHL all-star who signed on as the team’s director of player development this week. That’s the good news. The bad news is that every one was from Canada.

GOING DOWN

Tennis Town, USA

That apparently is what Las Vegas is trying to become after being nominated as one of 10 finalists for the United States Tennis Association’s (USTA) Best Tennis Town award. It’s a good thing supporting live professional tennis isn’t one of the criteria, or we wouldn’t stand a chance.

Swings and misses

Randy Ruiz, the 51s’ lone representative in the Triple-A All-Star Game, struck out on three pitches during his first at-bat and on five during his second at-bat Wednesday night. The Pacific Coast League Stars lost to the International League Stars 6-5. And he did not get to meet President Barack Obama. But it was only 90 degrees in Portland when the game started. So there’s that.

Tank’s temperature

On the other end of the thermometer, during a question-and-answer session with Steelers fans in Pittsburgh this week, former UNLV running back Frank Summers asked one in return: “Does it get negative temperatures here?” Someone told him not to miss practice the day they hand out the sideline parkas. To which The Tank replied: “Oh boy. It’s going to be an adjustment.” But nobody asked about Ray Lewis. That’s going to be adjustment, too.
