Teen enters plea in 2008 shooting of high school sophomore

Two weeks ago, the teen who shot to death Palo Verde freshman Christopher Privett was sentenced to life in prison. Privett died when he was hit by a bullet fired by Gerald Davison, 17, on Feb. 18, 2008.

Less than two weeks after Christopher’s death, another shooting rattled the Las Vegas Valley. Victor Bravo, 16, was shot on Feb. 25, 2008, near Gibson Middle School.

Today, one of the teens involved in the afterschool brawl before Bravo’s shooting entered a plea in Clark County District Court.

Tevin O’Neal Carr, 17, appearing in front of Judge Joe Bonaventure, pleaded to battery with substantial bodily harm. He entered an Alford plea, a plea in which a defendant admits there is likely enough evidence for a conviction but does not admit guilt.

Under the agreement, he could see one to five years in prison, or probation. Prosecutors aren’t making a sentencing recommendation, said Deputy District Attorney Sonia Jimenez.

Prosecutors say Carr conspired with Calvin Shelton, 20, to instigate a fight with a group of Hispanic students. Shelton, 20, on Friday pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit a crime and battery with a deadly weapon resulting in substantial bodily harm.

The case was supposed to go to trial Monday but the court date was vacated because of the plea agreements.

Under Shelton’s agreement with prosecutors, he will serve four to 10 years in prison.

Bravo, then a sophomore at Western High School, was shot twice and required extensive surgery. Records indicate he was trying to help a friend who had been jumped after school by a group of teenagers.
