Post office to stay open late for last-minute tax filers

Some Las Vegas post offices will extend hours of operation on tax day, April 15, to accommodate last-minute filers.

The United States Postal Service has arranged for taxpayers to get an April 15th postmark by depositing tax returns through the express drop-off lane until midnight Thursday at the James C. Brown Jr. Post Office, 1001 E. Sunset Road. The retail windows at the office will be open from 8 a.m. until midnight.

Tax returns can also be deposited in collection boxes outside several offices.

Collection box locations include:

•Red Rock Vista, 2449 North Tenaya Way.

•Spring Valley, 3375 S. Rainbow Blvd.

•Winterwood, 5070 Vegas Valley Drive.

•North Las Vegas Meadow Mesa, 4904 Camino Al Norte.

•Henderson, 404 S. Boulder Highway.

Another collection box will be placed at Mandalay Bay from noon to 8 p.m. on April 15. People who deposit their tax returns in this box will receive a free ticket to the Shark Reef. Stamps and postal scales also will be available.

“We’re trying to make it fun and convenient as possible,” said David Rupert, postal service spokesman.

The first-class postal rate is 44 cents for the first ounce. One ounce is about four pages.

Taxpayers who use a non-IRS labeled envelope should print the proper IRS address on the package and include a return address in the upper left corner on the envelope.
