The Boulder City Fire Department is investigating a fire at a single-story home that killed two pets and injured a police officer Wednesday night.

Firefighters responded at 8:25 p.m. Wednesday to the 1100 block of Avenue K, where smoke and flames were showing from the inside of the home, investigators said. Firefighters thought people were inside the residence at the time.

Firefighters entered the residence and found heavy smoke and a fire in the kitchen. The fire was put out and a search was conducted, but the homeowners weren't inside the residence.

Firefighters said a dog and bird died in the fire and a Boulder City police officer was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation. The homeowners have been displaced due to the extent of damage to the electrical system.

Two Henderson Fire Department units assisted at the request of Boulder City firefighters. Boulder City officials will conduct the investigation.

Fire Chief Kevin Nicholson said the damage is estimated at $75,000, but the amount could grow.
