Police: 80-year-old man mixing gunpowder burns himself

Homes evacuated

An 80-year-old man told authorities he severely burned his groin Thursday after gunpowder and other substances he was mixing at his house exploded, Metro Police said.

Police temporarily evacuated homes near East Robindale Road and Spencer Street Thursday afternoon while officers searched for explosives, police said.

Lt. Dan McGrath said the man was taken to University Medical Center about 3 p.m. Officers initially thought he had shot himself because of the severity of his injuries, McGrath said.

Police said the man told officers he was mixing the gun powder in his home in the 1900 block of Chestnut Lane when it exploded, burning his genitals. McGrath said the man’s injuries were not life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing, police said.
