MAGIC International, one of the city’s largest conventions, opened Tuesday in Las Vegas.

The fashion convention is held twice a year in Las Vegas, once in February and again in August. What is known as one of the world’s largest fashion trade shows spans across the convention show floors at both the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Mandalay Bay convention center.

While MAGIC wouldn’t disclose attendance numbers, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority expects the convention to draw about 75,000 attendees.

More than 3,500 exhibitors — 1,400 of them new to MAGIC — will be showing at this week’s conference. Organizers said this is the largest assortment of brands they’ve had in the last five years.

“With a 25 percent increase in retailer registration, significantly increased square footage and hundreds of new stores planning to attend, the August 2010 MAGIC Marketplace will show that the industry is enjoying a solid revival,” MAGIC International President Chris DeMoulin said.

MAGIC began as strictly a men’s fashion convention but has expanded to include smaller shows during the week, such as WWD MAGIC, Project, Pool, Slate, Street and FN Platform.

The convention runs through Thursday evening.
