Company gets $5.9 million to build solar panels in Nevada

WASHINGTON -- The White House announced today that $5.9 million in stimulus funds has been awarded to a firm that plans to manufacturer solar panels in Nevada.

The company, Amonix, was awarded the tax credit funding that it plans to match with private capital for its Nevada operations that supporters say will bring jobs to Nevada.

“This funding will be used to create Nevada jobs involved in the manufacturing of highly efficient solar panels that increase the amount of clean energy that can be harnessed from every ray of sunshine," said Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley. "We are working to make Nevada a world leader in the use and production of solar energy and this $5.9 million awarded to Amonix under the Recovery Act will soon mean green job creation right here in the Silver State.”

The funds are part of the economic recovery bill President Barack Obama signed into law last year.

Berkley supported the bill, as did the other Democrats in the Nevada delegation. Nevada's Republicans voted against it.

"The Recovery Act has been a major force in breaking the trajectory of this recession and stimulating growth and hiring," Obama said in announcing the funds for various energy projects today at the White House.

"And one of the most popular elements of it has been a clean energy manufacturing initiative that will put Americans to work while helping America gain the lead when it comes to clean energy."

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who led passage of the Recovery Act, welcomed the jobs for Nevada.

“Investing in clean energy jobs is a vital part of diversifying Nevada’s economy," Reid said. “This project will innovate solar energy technology to put our natural resources to work and create jobs that get Nevadans back to work.”
