Make A Difference Day cleanup to take place Saturday at Red Rock Canyon

More than two dozen volunteers are expected to celebrate Make A Difference Day on Saturday at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area – a week late.

Due to a scheduled event last weekend, the park’s sixth annual celebration of national Make A Difference Day was postponed a week. The day was celebrated nationally last weekend.

Between 8 a.m. and noon, volunteers ages 16 and older are invited to rehabilitate the Red Spring picnic and boardwalk areas at Red Rock Canyon. The volunteers will improve the trails, install signs on the boardwalk, paint a kiosk, trim vegetation and do general area improvements. Snacks, drinks and lunch will be provided.

“It’s a heavily-used picnic area,” said Pat Williams, community outreach representative for the Friends of Red Rock Canyon. “We’re trying to revitalize it, get it back to its beautiful standards.”

In addition, children ages 5 to 12 are invited to the Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center between 8:30 and 11 a.m. to clean the interpretative displays, sweep the walkways and drives, learn about the Mojave Desert and enjoy a visit from the area spokes-‘tortoise,’ Mojave Max. Snacks and drinks will be provided.

Friends of the Red Rock Canyon, the Bureau of Land Management, Howard Hughes Corporation, REI and Red Rock Canyon Interpretative Association are helping to sponsor the event.

Organizers are still looking for volunteers to help out on Make a Difference Day, the nation’s largest celebration of community service. Interested residents should register online at www.getoutdoorsnevada.org.
