A long-awaited road project to improve access to the Sun City Anthem area of Henderson is expected to begin in February.

City officials said work is scheduled to start on a project to widen Volunteer Boulevard and Executive Airport Drive from two lanes to four lanes.

The project will also complete Via Inspirada and Bicentennial Parkway, improving access to Sun City Anthem, Anthem Highlands, Madeira Canyon and Seven Hills.

The project will provide a third way into the area, reducing congestion on Eastern Avenue, Sun City Anthem Drive and Anthem Parkway, which loop through the area, city officials said.

The new intersection of Volunteer, Via Inspirada and Executive Airport will have a traffic signal and solar-powered street lights to increase safety.

The nearly $5 million project is expected to be complete this fall.

The city already completed a related project on Volunteer and Executive Airport Drive, but because of limitations on the federal stimulus money used for that project, the widening project now beginning had to be a separate project.
