4-month-old Las Vegas Valley boy dies from flu

A four-month-old boy in the Las Vegas Valley has died from the flu, Southern Nevada Health District officials announced today.

Officials said the infant's flu-related death coincides with increased influenza activity in Southern Nevada.

"While any death saddens us, the unfortunate reality is that flu deaths are not uncommon and the CDC estimates that about 30,000 people die each year from the flu. It is definitely upsetting when they are children," said Dr. Lawrence Sands, chief health officer, in a statement.

Sands said the best protection against the flu, for people older than six months, is a flu shot — available at public health centers and health clinics across the valley.

Health officials said flu cases peak in January and February, but it's not too late to get a flu vaccine.

The following public health centers are open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday:

- Ravenholt Public Health Center: 625 Shadow Lane, Las Vegas

- East Las Vegas Public Health Center: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, Las Vegas

- Henderson Public Health Center: 520 E. Lake Mead Parkway, Henderson

- Mesquite Public Health Center: 830 Hafen Lane, Mesquite (open 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays)
