Dog dies in Las Vegas apartment fire

Apartment fire

A family's large dog died Sunday night during a kitchen fire in a Las Vegas apartment, according to a Las Vegas Fire & Rescue official.

The two adults and the child who lived there were not at home at the time of the fire, which occurred around 8 p.m. Sunday at Oasis Gateway Apartments at 6501 W. Vegas Drive, said Tim Szymanski, public information officer.

A neighbor heard an alarm, smelled smoke and went to the door of the apartment, but no one answered, Szymanski said. The neighbor could see flames in the kitchen through a window, so pulled alarms in the building to warn other occupants and called 911, he said.

Firefighters said they arrived about 8:11 p.m. and had the fire knocked down by 8:18 p.m. They said the fire gutted the kitchen and caused moderate to heavy smoke damage.

The fire had started on the stove and extended to the cabinets above, Syzmanski said.

Firefighters estimated the damage at $20,000.
