Court rejects appeal of killer who shot ex-girlfriend in desert

CARSON CITY – The Nevada Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of convicted killer Geoffrey Lee Grove, who was sentenced to a life term without possibility of parole for the murder of his ex-girlfriend in Clark County.

Grove pleaded guilty to murder and other charges including strangling Shpresa Hamzaj with a dog collar, taking her into the desert and shooting her in the head in 2007.

Grove, through his lawyers, objected to District Judge David Wall in his sentencing talking about the possibility of Grove’s future dangerousness. The lawyers said the judge made unsubstantiated assumptions.

Grove maintains his impulse and anger control issues should be considered as mitigation in his sentencing rather than on the possibility he would be dangerous in the future.

The Supreme Court said Wall did not abuse his discretion in commenting on the case considering "the brutality of the murder and the prolonged agony the victim suffered."
