Henderson family displaced after apartment fire

Apartment fire

Five members of a Henderson family were displaced from their apartment Thursday night after a fire caused by an oven that was left on, Henderson Fire Department officials said.

There were no injuries, officials said.

Firefighters responded at 7:10 p.m. to the blaze at an apartment complex in the 400 block of Hunter Street, in the area of Sunset Road and Boulder Highway. The fire was discovered by a child at the apartment who called 911 and escaped with his younger sister.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the second floor of the two-story complex. Inside, they found the oven, cabinets and a microwave on fire, officials said.

The fire was kept under control by a sprinkler and was extinguished in less than five minutes, officials said.

The apartment sustained extensive smoke and water damage and can’t be occupied until repairs are made, officials said. None of the other three apartments in the building were impacted, officials said.

Damage to the apartment was estimated at $20,000, officials said. Investigators listed the cause of the fire as accidental due to an oven inadvertently turned on that had a plastic bag stored in the bottom.

Two adults and three children lived in the apartment and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
